When auditioning for American Idol, stay away from

1. Christina Aguilera
2. Mariah Carey
3. Stevie Wonder
4. Any previous Idol winner
5. Whitney Houston
6. Celine Dion
7. Beyonce, unless you can pull it off. And even then, you had better pull it off.
8. Justin Timberlake
9. Anyone who has ever been on the Mickey Mouse Club (to a lesser extent, Kids Incorporated).

In fact, follow the rules of the cover song totally apply here. You have to play the song better than the original. This is what Kula Shaker did with Deep Purple's "Hush." It has to sound like no one else has sung it before. Or it has to be so different from the original that it is a new take on the song. More rules later.
