Here's the problem. It's not like I didn't know this was coming. When it was 63 on January 4, that was unexpected. This is normal. This picture, taken by my beautiful wife, is from the night when our furnace blew up for the second time in five days. We had our windows open. It was -15. At this point, frostbite can occur within 10 minutes or less. This is a similar temperature and wind chill to what you would expect at 24,000 feet on Mount Everest.
I had a problem in August, when it was 99 degrees. I was not prepared for 99 degrees in a house where there was no air-conditioning. But you cannot tell me that this picture was not in the back of my mind when we accepted the position at the Hall in April. I knew that this would be a factor. So how do we deal with this? Tomorrow is another day. Currently it is 9, and feels like -5. It will be 4 tonight.
Cold is relative. Dan Hurley will tell you this. He lives in Freaking, Minnesota. Last year, when I was here to interview it was 24 degrees, and I was shivering in my hotel room. I had, three days previous to that interview, been at Minute Maid Park where it was 82 degrees. I had a sunburn. Last Friday it was 27 degrees and I didn't wear gloves. Just a sweater. It would have to warm up 40 degrees to reach Houston temperatures. But this is "normal." Is "normal" what we're used to? Absolutely not. But am I getting used to Upstate New York Normal? I guess. Will I ever be able to encounter 110 degrees? You betcha. Because when my hair freezes on the two-block walk back to work, I'll remember this day.
(And I'm not kidding. My hair froze.)

Hey, at least your area made CNN, that's something. Is the lake effect snow reaching you over there?
I remember the good old days of walking to school up there and having frozen hair and eyebrows by the time we got there.
I actually did get frostbite once; I was out in -10 for about 20 minutes, my left ear swelled up like an old tomato.
I'm glad you guys are enjoying your time up there.
Haha, I agree with Kami!
And yes, this post nearly brings me to tears, but then I remember as you pointed out that they would likely freeze to my face and give me frostbite. So I refrain.
I perceive here in MN it is a BIT different right now because our temps haven't gotten to double digits in about 2 weeks. Which is in some ways good because we don't have to deal with the buttloads of snow that you guys get when the temps hover in the 20s. Imagine my surprise when I learned it can actually be TOO COLD to snow!
But now I am not sure which I would rather have, -10 and safe driving conditions, or 25 and a blizzard. Hmm. 82 at Minute Maid sounds good...
