Big game tonight. Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma.
Texas Tech is #2 in the BCS. OU is #5. Texas is #3.
If Tech wins, they will play Iowa State for the Blind in the Big 12 Championship. If OU wins, hold on, we have a three-way tie where OU beat Tech, Tech beat Texas, but Texas beat OU. The tie-breaker basically goes to the highest ranked team in the BCS.
If OU beats Tech convincingly - at home - look for OU to jump Texas and be the representative from the Big 12 south. If OU barely beats Tech, Texas might be able to stay ahead of OU in the BCS.
Think back to Week 9, the Texas Tech-Texas game. Texas was the BCS #1 team. Tech was ranked 7th, obviously undefeated, and behind one-loss teams USC, Georgia, and Oklahoma. When Tech beat Texas, they jumped five spots in the BCS. So a win over a top-five team has a huge impact on your standing. Whether or not the voters will take into account that it took a last-second play at home to beat Texas depends on how OU wins, should they win.
Of course, if Tech takes care of their business, and talking to my dad - who is from Lubbock - will tell you that is not a certainty, we're not having this conversation. And if Tech does win, we Big 12 supporters had better get our guns up, because if the Big 12 South loses the Big 12 championship, you're looking at USC playing. And we don't want that to happen.

I was in the same camp as you before the game. An OU win puts OU ahead of UT in the BCS.
In hindsight, I'd say the fact that OU put a whooping on Tech solidified the idea that Tech beating Texas was a little bit more of a fluke than the huge triumph it got trumped up to be. Tech had to play the first half of their lives coupled with the worst first half by UT this season (note: not of their lives; they've had some pretty bad 1st halves against OSU), and Texas STILL should have won the game (way to go, Gideon!). Also, something I've never heard anyone comment on is the fact that Quan Cosby didn't play that game. So, there goes McCoy's most sure-handed receiver. Everybody stop Shipley.
Now the question is, will OU jump UT when they beat OSU? Also, consider what would happen should OSU beat OU. Tech would go to the Big 12 Championship, but would in no way be able to jump UT. Which would put UT against Alabama or UF (I vote UF). You think the BCS haters are out in force now, just wait and see if that happened. A team that didn't win their conference in the BCS Championship. You wouldn't be able to shut them up with a cattle prod.
I know this is a super long comment, but I got one more...
Is a playoff system better than the BCS? I say NO STINKING WAY! The BCS makes it SOO freaking interesting. And generates conversations like these. And who among you could generate a comment this long that takes 45 minutes out of your day at work? And then, when your boss asks you what you've been doing all day, you answer, "Arguing about the BCS rankings online," and he doesn't give a crap! He just says,"OU sucks!" Is it just me? I must live in Austin.
I'm out.
Ty, I agree with most of what you said. I still think atleast a +1 game would make it that much better. Just let the top 4 BCS teams play in two of the BCS bowls and play an extra game to determine the champ. I do love how exciting this year has been and the attention the Big XII gets.
You don't hear about Cosby being out that game the same way you don't hear about Ryan Reynolds being out against Texas. He was the core to their defense, and then poof, Texas scored every possesion after he got knocked out.
It would appear (finally..) that OU has figured out the middle LB spot with Austin Box. (the fill-in during the texas game that mccoy exposed was some guy who will never see the field again)
Texas fans have nightmares about the Gideon pick the same way Sooner fans see Shipley cutting through our kickoff coverage like warm butter (not to mention the pick in the endzone that wasn't a pick, or was a pick...)
If I'm a Texas fan, I root for OSU to beat OU in a tight game. Won't matter who wins the big XII, tech won't be able to catch TX. They can sit at home after their 70 point A&M win and practice for FLA.
Excellent analogy about Ryan Reynolds. I tried to point this out to a bunch of other UTers not long after the game. They just told me to shut up.
